Experience
Experience 
XP as in other games is a measure of the experience your character has. After gaining a certain amount of experience one will go up in rank. Experience is gained by completing Missions, scanning and colonizing Planets, and participating in Combat.
The amount of experience gained can be temporarily increased by using Experience Boosting Artifacts. Remember to maximize your energy before using an experience booster.
