At random, you will encounter computer-controlled enemies while exploring deep space. These enemies can be found on the "battle" tab, and are commonly referred to as non-player characters or NPCs. Some are common and provide bonus experience when destroyed. Others will drop badges or sometimes research points. A few will even give you a chance to temporarily or permanently improve your ship or planets via special modules and artifacts.
Upon Creation of your Galaxy Legion account you begin with 2 NPC Slots, but you can gain more by completing certain missions. Most NPC's can be found at any time, but some NPCs will only be encountered at certain times of the year during special events, whilst others are only available whilst certain missions are in progress.
Virtually all NPC's also have a timer that prevents them being "seen" indefinitely. Until the timer expires, the NPC stays on your battle tab until it is destroyed. When the timer expires, the NPC will be lost (regardless of the amount of damage a player has caused to it without destroying it) and a new one will replace it (once the player presses the battle tab). A small number of mission-specific NPCs do not have a timer, as these missions require the destruction of a specific NPC, and will not continue further until the NPC has been destroyed.
Check out the lists below and see what you can expect.

Common NPCs
These Common_NPCs are easy to find and as such will appear on a regular basis. They tend to be easy to kill and will often only give experience as a reward.
Uncommon NPCs
Uncommon_NPCs spawn less frequently than common NPCs. They tend to be a little tougher to defeat than common NPCs, and their kill rewards may include experience or NPC-Dropped_Artifacts.
Rare NPCs
Rare_NPCs spawn less frequently than uncommon NPCs. Their kill rewards often include NPC-Dropped_Artifacts. They are strong enemies that can sometimes be alerted to your legion, allowing other players to join you in the fight. Each rare NPC that can be alerted can provide a limited number of rewards (typically 3-4 rewards per rare NPC), meaning multiple players can receive rewards and not just the person that discovered the NPC.
Players that cause large amounts of damage may also "lock" on to the NPC, meaning a reward will be guaranteed for that player once the NPC has been killed. However, if more people attack the NPC than there are rewards available, the players that cause the least damage will receive no reward at all.
Extremely Rare NPCs
Extremely_Rare_NPCs spawn less frequently than rare NPCs. They are the strongest enemies in the game, requiring large amounts of energy to defeat. As with rare NPCs, they can be alerted to your legion, and typically require a large number of players to destroy them. The increase in difficulty however is matched by an increase in the number of available rewards that these NPCs will drop (typically 5-10 per extremely rare NPC). As with rares, if more people attack the NPC than there are rewards available, the players that cause the least amount of damage will receive no reward. Players that cause large amounts of damage may also "lock" on the NPC, meaning a reward will be guaranteed for that player once the NPC has been killed.
NPC Factions
Many of the NPCs that can be found in the game belong to a faction in the game. This may be a particular species or an organisation of some kind. More information on these factions can be found in the box below.
