Cloak is only one line of defense, and relying on it exclusively is not a guarantee of protection. However, if you can get the cloak of a planet that no one else has scanned to over 8000 it will be very, very hard for anyone else to ever find it through traditional scanning (there's always the unlikely risk of it being discovered by a critical Hack on you). Keep in mind your Legion Bonus also affects cloaking strength on a planet. Equipping five of the most powerful researchable scanners available (Continuum Analyzer-Mark III) will only give a ship 4800 scan strength, so it would take a very extensive set of artifacts (both temporary and ship modules) and likely the Explorer [[Profession]] as well to get a scan strength high enough to even start having a chance at seeing a planet with that much cloak.

  • During scanning, there is a first roll to check if the scan was successful. If it was, a random planet is picked from the galaxy. If the planet that was picked has cloaking, then a 2nd roll takes place.
  • If the planet's cloak is greater than the ship's scan rating, the scan will fail.
  • If the ship's scan rating is greater than the planets cloak, than the formula is as follows: CHANCE = (1 - (PLANET CLOAK / SHIP SCAN))
  • So, if the planet has 2000 cloak, and the ship's scan is 5000, then there is a 60% chance the scan will be successful.
