Hi, I'm just about to start playing this game, but have been reading a few 'hints' and the wiki first.

I'm a typical casual gamer, that plays games about 2 times a day.

I'm just wondering, is it a good idea to look for a legion immediately, for help and advice? Or would I be better off going solo for a short while before joining a legion?

Yes immediately look for a legion.

finding a good legion early will really help you learn the game and give you a lot more protection, try and find someone who is orginized and has some higher ranks in it, and good luck!

I haven't created my ship yet, waiting until after work (3 hrs left) before I do that.

I'm thinking that cyborg race with the 20% research would be nice, and maybe the spy profession for cloaking bonus. Maybe I am wrong, but a cyborg spy just sounds cool to me.

I'm guessing you apply for legions 'in-game'? Or is the forum the place to join legions? <-- sorry, not even seen a game screen yet. I'm doing research first ^_^

you apply in-game, there will be a "legion" tab, you can search for legions to join there, the forums are just for extra name recognition.

elaerys the Vygoid is very good starting out. later you will want to change your race

for your job it rilly depends on how you want to play the game. PVP or mission based.

Spy, Physicist, Hacker are more for PVP
Builder is PVP and Misson
Excavator, Miner are Misson.

but Builder is the best out of Profession for the race. as your research grows your upkeep will grow aswell. but as a builder at half the cost.

And yes find a legion soon you will make mistakes in the beginning that you will regert later. get a legion real early will help stop the mistakes.

Builder isn't super useful starting out, you'd probably be best off with Vygoid Excavator, unless you're worried about PvP right away. Spy is better to keep you safe but also helps with hacking, but Hacker helps more with hacking, so it depends on if you're worried about keeping away from people.

EDIT: Also, yeah, join a Legion right away, because you can always join a higher level one if you seem to outgrow them or just don't like them.

Personally, for low rank legions I would recommend Vygoid Genome or the Mizfits

You have some interesting points, initially my reason for Spy was that I could 'hide' from being attacked in PvP during the low-levels.
I would like to avoid PvP at the start, and focus on building up and missioning. So I saw spy as a way to prevent PvP due to cloak bonus.

Yes - you have three, "free" race and profession changes when you get so far down a mission chain.

If you want to PvP, I'd go for a Konqul spy.

Attack bonus, kills people faster and makes them think twice when they attack you.
Cloak bonus helps you to hide, and to hack.

Join a <helpful> Legion IMMEDIATELY ! I was where you are about 2 weeks ago, and bummed around for a bit on my own. Ohhhh...the pain.....

Then I joined: well, this isn't a recruitment post...But OMG, am I WAY better off now.

No no no , You want to PVP alot in the beginning just make sure you have alot of defense hull or attack, so you can get your Dominion cannons because PVP gets alot harder. I would go Vygoid Excavator. I really want to become that.

On this point, you may want a spare 500 badges. The new market items are hard to get a high ranks, so start saving ASAP.
