Could someone actually explain or point me in the right direction of finding out how the combat damage stats are calculated at all?

Mainly Your attack and defense is calculated VS enemy attack and defense. (scan and cloak may come into play for critical hits)
How to count actual damage? I guess the formula is a secret...

It's even lower than some rank 1 (with 5 titanium plates installed) Also, start researching/installing combat modules if you want to fight NPC's. Your Attack/defense ain't up to par with your level. Thats because i havent had use for combat stuff, i only researched it up two or three tiers, concentrating in energy and planetary structures. And i only wanted to test the npc ;P I love new combat system that you can finally be 1-shotted. Under old system, you can't.. Now, combat is more realistic heh. Weak ships with virtually no defense should be 1- shot by powerful ship. I find fighting NPC alot fun now but rewards need to be upped badly, lol.. I have about 80 kills just cuz they are more fun than fighting players so far. Heh. Sad thing is.. 80 kills, ONE single UNCOMMON spawned.. Too rare for a simple uncommon. ;(

I have been focusing more on stealth techs and energy techs so my loadouts are pretty crap against the NPC.. at least for level 29 I am gearing up towards pwning these things though

Smart NPCs would grab the opportunity to counterattack and finish that energy-depleted player off for pissing them off in first place. It makes sense. Also, introducing this concept would make GL first FB game with more "alive" NPC that bites!!! Well what about the supirior player that attacks the NPC with a victorious 10:1 damage ratio? when the AI retaliates, they'll kill themselves eventually. This gives the player an option to attack once, let the NPC throw itself into the player's waiting cannons, then reap the rewards.

You won't even get any rewards for doing it.. It is same way as PC enemies to attack you and get disabled accidently. You get no rewards at all even experience. You get nothing.. That aggressor gets exp per hit no matter win or lose..

Nice! I see new NPC MISSION came in..
The Dark Theft Our allies were planning to unveil a new prototype chron structure, but a fleet from the Dark Smugglers Guild stole the parts. Ten of their ships made off with its components - find them and recover the equipment. Start Mission 5 1 0 / 10 Complete
Rewards: 60 1(on completion) Risks: You must find and disable Chron Shift Carrier ships for parts (Battle Tab) This mission will end after 5 repeated completions
Requirement: Chron Shifter Part Completion item: Chron Shifter
Dunno what stat it is..

Gee, I killed 25 more NPCs til my energy ran out and encountered no Chron carrier ship yet.. I wonder if they are classified as rare? I did encounter two uncommon Stryll fighters and got 2 seeker artifacts so that spawn rate on uncommon seems got increased so that's good..

I try to make all mission-based NPCs as common as possible, but keep in mind that all common NPCs have the same chance of appearing. Thus, you might have to wipe out out a few other types before you find the specific ones you are looking for. 25 though... ouch.
Since this is the first mission of its type, I'm continuing to look at the stats to make sure that the mission turn-ins is not too high for the expected spawn rate.
Let me know what your findings are... It would be interesting to see when you finally stumble upon one or more Chron Shift Carriers.
Some background information on how "mission NPCs" work:
- Mission-based NPCs will only spawn for those eligible for the mission - The NPCs will stop spawning after the mission is fully complete.

What you are implying is that Chron Shift Carrier is a COMMON NPC.. If so then it's broken at my rank range as it seems.. I was expecting it as uncommon or rare because of 25 kills (well now 30th now and no luck).. I did wipe both NPC slots often without any luck of spawning the carrier.. Too bad that I won't be able to play Galaxy legion much (maybe little time or nothing can depends on wifi hotspots and time availability) in next almost two weeks (I will leave tmw for FLA vacation for Disney and other parks) to feel this new feature out! Oh.. To some non-DOO players who knew about my absence and took advantage of disabling/hacking me due to my inactivity will be met with my "wrath" when I return..

Chron Shift Carrier XXII 110 Standard / Common 100% Stable Spawned More information: Chron Shift Carrier XXII ( Dark Smugglers Guild ) Rank 110 Pirate Common Attack 5 StatusCombat LogActions 850 / 850 Shields 800 / 800 Hull The Dark Smugglers Guild rigged these ships specifically to carry chron shifter parts safely. Their design will make it possible to disable their ships and leave the parts unharmed. Enemy Type Standard Attack 600 Defense 650 And it drops Chron Shift part (no stat) especially for a mission. 9 more to go.. Gee. Heh.. Nice experience by disabling that carrier (40 exp)... How can I hide some content for spoiler? I seems can't find right color to match it with the background..

YES!!!!!!!! I encountered a RARE NPC: The Crimson Armor.. Standard / Rare 100% Stable!!! It drops Crimson Auto-Phaser (Look at my ship!!) and it STACKS with my 8 guns!!!! I'm soo happy!!! 3 more to go to fully equip my ship with all guns.. It took me about 80 more kills (only 2 more to go to complete the mission) to meet that rare encounter!!! NPC is sooo cool! I was willing to spend 30 GL on energy refills just to be curious what mission reward is.. I won't tell you what stat it is here if it is not a ship component that you could see.. (private message would do)..
