Do you want to be good at Galaxy Legion, but aren't sure how?
Are you tired to having a poor combat reputation?
Do you want to be able to auto-rank?
You looking to join one of the top legions AND be a real contributor?
Is your goal to be one of the most well-known and feared ships in game?

Well, today is your lucky day! The secret to playing Galaxy Legion well is very simple. It's so simple, it applies to all play styles:

The PVPer
The NPCer
The Base Smasher
The Slow-Ranker
The Fast Ranker
The Small Ship Build (SSB)
The Medium Ship Build (MSB)
The Large Ship Build (LSB)

The secret to Galaxy Legion is simple:

Artifact Points

Just in case you missed it, here it is again:

Artifact Points

This is the secret that the better players know about; and now, you know it, too. Having a high AP/hr production rate is the secret to having a great ship.

But how does this help you? Let me show you some of the ways this works. High AP production gives you:

More hull and shields (Durtanium Brackets and XCharge Cells)
More Defense (Android Helmsmen)
More Attack and/or Energy (Rescued Prisoners)
More Research (Android Scientists)
The Ability to scan more planets (Star Chart Purgers)
Even more storage! (via the CT Lab)
And too many more benefits to list here!

The more AP you produce per hour, the better your ship will improve. Again, all the better players know this. Why do you think 16x mining toxics go for only 750 CTP? And 17x research plasmas go for 3,000 CTP? But 15x+ artifact planets go for 10,000 CTP and up? This is why? The best players want more AP/hr. What they have is not enough. They want more and more!

Are you a legion that has a hard time keeping high rankers? Maybe you need to change your base production from research and/or mining to artifact. It will help your legion in the long run.

Let's get to the nitty-gritty? How do you increase your AP/hr? Well, that's a great question. Here's a short list of how to do it:

The NPC/Auto-rank route: Farm Troop Carriers to get Terraformers (and the mythical Quasi-Space Expander). The best way to do this is to be able to auto-rank off NPCing. Once you get to that stage, the terraformers will rain from heaven!

The Taltherian way: if Auto-ranking is a little to fast for you then you can go the slow boat way, with the Taltherian race. Once you unlock this race, you can uplift a Mega Rich artifact planet to a 15x MR planet in less than a month.

The Big Bad Wolf Way: if you'd rather use brute force, change to Konqul and start scanning for those big artifact planets. Don't waste your invades on mining and research planets. Just go for artifact planets. Warning: the really good ones are probably heavily cloaked and defended!

Trade Your Way to the Top: if you produce a lot of artifacts, you're not going to use them all. Why not trade your excess on the open market (or even the GTC!), get some CTP, and buy some planets? It's not like you're going to use those 1000 Repair Nanodrones anytime soon!

The Wealth is King Way: while few people will admit it, there are quite a few CC users out in GL land. And thank God for those people, as they keep Dan employed and GL running. (You think Dan is doing this out of the goodness of his heart? Or community service?) If you want to get better sooner rather than later, spend that GP on Terraformers and QSEs, and uplift your best planets. While some players scoff at this method, you don't have to tell anyone. Just tell them the RNG was really, really, really lucky for you while NPCing ;)

Many of the best players improve their AP production with a combination of these methods. Not everyone spends GP, and not everyone NPCs a ton. But the top ships know the value of AP/hr.

Remember, if you want to know how to improve your ship, increase your Artifact production. Plain and simple. You may not see the results right away, but stick with this plan. You'll see your ship improve gradually over time. Maybe you'll be up with me on the leaderboards someday :D

Is auto ranking constantly for a few hundred levels at once worth it though ?

Never done it, but I would guess no.
unless your attack is crazy high you'll end up taking way too many shots to kill npcs.
More shots = less per rank

Have to give some time for your ap to work.

For some people, it is. But it's not the only way to go about doing this. I'm only rank 1242 and having played GL for 824 days, for an average 1.5 ranks per day. I rarely auto-rank off NPCs more than once a day. Most of the time, I just use whatever energy I have left to rank off NPCs, so I can have a full energy bar to hit a base.

Even with that, I have still have over 40 Terraformers in stock, just waiting to find some decent planets to upgrade. I do more uplifting with the Urbanize ability than with Terraformers. And I haven't used GP for Terraformers since making my mission Exotic.

This depends. How are you auto ranking? Is it all off of NPC's? If so then yes it is worth it. If not then no not so much. I have done this and it sucks. Granted I did it at much higher ranks so it didn't matter as much but it still hurts. That is 300 ranks of Troopers I lost out on. :( Just something to keep in mind as you play.

auto ranking off NPC w/o using NI, Mem implant or being human. And with an energy per lvl ratio lower than 13, prefer lower than 12. That is, IMO, the best possible way to auto rank. The "low energy" part is kinda another way of saying sufficiently high NPC atk/rank to ensure that you are getting fairly close to min-shotting stuff for maximal return.
