i would say the biggest advantage is during special events, like halloween and xmas, where there are limited times of certain npcs appearing, being able to auto rank will give you a much higher chance of gaining all of X rewards.
the planet slots becomes pretty moot if you stick to only colonizing quality planets.

If someone is farming you then you can immediately surpass that person and kick his face in. That's the only benefit I can think of.

You don't have to be a higher rank than your target to zero. Well that's from my experience.

If someone is farming you, it's usually because their ship is at a huge advantage over your own. So while you probably could zero him out regardless of a rank difference, he can do it back far more easily in theory. Basically auto ranking can be considered the puffer fish approach; if you're suddenly 80 ranks higher overnight, he'll probably go running scared. Just my thoughts on the matter really.

The problem is that if a player actually gains 80 ranks overnight, s/he may not necessarily have the research or artifact production to back up the gains. If the ship strength stays the same, it hardly makes a difference what the rank is - if anything, if all of the rank points went into decks, the ship would have a larger damage cap and may be easier to disable

What rank do you think I'm at?
Hit me up, when you see me on your BT (if you're around my badging range), Rank 389 ARustyTinCan.

Hehe Im hoping he takes you up on this and Im anxious to see the results. I checked your ship out while we were both in TSL trading and you've done quite well for yourself. Our attack and D are pretty similar and im 40 ranks above you :?

I think Dan's reasoning for not needing to up the Trooper limit is that by 2200 you've maxed enough of your own, go out and steal some now :P
