 I've been away for 3 hours and no research points were added while I was away. When I came home and hit the ship tab than back to research 1 hours worth of points were added. Not sure what's wrong

did you have any alerts that people had hacked your database?

Also, make sure you have not reached your Research capacity. There will be a message in red within the Research tab indicating this.
