Some Artifacts: why the extra work?

Rescued Prisoners, Android Scientists/Helmsman, XCharge Cells , Tesseract Container, Mass Storage Pod and probably others.
These items can not be shared/traded/given/stolen. Why is there an extra step in having up 'use' them to get them as part of the ship. This is extra work and as someone recently pointed out in another thread, confusing for new players.
I can't see a negative to having these work automatically.
(I purposely left out ship-bots for those who are worried about being larger and taking extra damage).

Maybe they SHOULD be sharable, sendable, etc.

And also the person who is willing to buy 10 terraformers and hand them out to officers in their legion.

I think the reason for them being usable is so that if you click the "Receive Artifact Shipment" button a bunch of times you still know what you actually got!
Also, I'm one of those people who likes my Research to end with a 0 or a 5, so making Android Scientists automatic would bug the heck out of me... Though Your Mileage May Vary
