The Lutuma Chronicles Chapter Eight (Final)

Mission Briefing

The Chamber has been prepared, but the Lutuma have arrived in large numbers, and are blockading the area. We can't risk relocating the Eye from the Kassivar until we deal with their ships first.

We're also getting reports of Lutuma fleet engagements elsewhere, as well as escalating attacks on our border colonies and outposts.
At least we prepared. We knew this was coming.

Incoming transmission. It's from our Lutuma contact.
This should be interesting. Transfer me through.

...
Hello again.

Their response is aggressive, but not unexpected.
What else do you know about this ?

We know that you've been building a new Eye Chamber. How did you possibly come across the schematics?
It's hard to believe, but it was provided by the Great Elders.

What??! The Great Elders are gone. The Eye does not communicate in that way.
It did this time. They claimed that it was a special circumstance.

That doesn't make any sense. The Eye showed us a vision of the Kassivar, we just didn't know it at the time. Why would they do that?
The Great Elders influenced that vision on purpose.

No. They...
They used the Lutuma government and their reckless search as a way to attract a new steward.

But... If that is true, how does anyone trust the visions at all?
I don't know. There is still much we need to study on them.

So then - you intend to keep it? To bond with it?
Yes

Then you are no better than our government. The Eye, eventually, will twist and pollute the core of your entire civilization. It corrupts. You've seen what it did to us.
It's a risk we're willing to take. The Eye can lead to new scientific breakthroughs.

Did the Great Elders say anything else?
No, we were unable to ask further questions.

We should have never opened the Kassivar... If we had just left the Eye inside, it would have remained dark.
It would have found a way, or prevented that situation altogether.

... Now it has led to war... an unwelcome outcome.
Tell that to your leaders and the ships that are attacking us.

This is not what we wanted! I still know many families in those fleets.
We're not particularly fond of fighting the Lutuma either.

Then we have to do something. Our leaders will sacrifice everything and everyone to get the Eye back. This is how far the corruption has crept.
How strong are your political ties ? If we focus on destabilizing the leadership, can your faction take over ?

You are willing to help with a coup? I suppose one is finally possible now.
If it means stopping the war with far less casualties, then yes.

We have strong support, but it will not be easy. Most of the government still remains in Oruas. We'd have to convince the fleets here to turn back... against them.
Can we do that ?

We can, but not without taking over the lead Command Ships.
What do you need from them ?

Command codes. Without them, our fleet won't make it past the Oruas defense grid when we finally return.
Where would we find these ships ?

They are spread throughout the engaging armada. Not hard to spot. We'll pass along details.
Alright, we'll get the codes.

I'll get in touch with my contacts.
Try to recall the ships attacking our colonies first.

I'll try. It will take time.
Good luck.

Commander...
Yes ?

I meant what I said. When this is over, and you reclaim the Eye...
We'll be careful.

There will reach a point where your people can no longer cope with the corruption. You won't see it coming.
