I'd go for the toxic. I'm at rank 591 and most of my research now comes from my artifact shipments. So I couldn't care less about it anymore. Mining on the other hand needs to increase so you can add more expensive stuff to your ship and take more planets when it gets costly.
Plus I recently lost an irradiated...

15x gas, turn it into a 17x plasma and use it as storage with 500+ research to boot. It is a little less credits and no em, but I only am going to take a 17/18x M irradiated at this point for mining. rank 1760.

Mid 1100s and I'm taking (if by "take" you mean steal) the maxed out gas planet. My reasoning? A 15x VM gas will produce roughly the same number of credits after conversion as a 15/16x Toxic because of the extra space and plethora of research producing artifacts. Also, in the unlikely event of a new CT recipe or new tier of research, the toxic won't do me any good.

Rank 480, take the gas, turn it into a plasma and then it gives me a lot more flexibility than mining, I can research stuff, pour research into our CT Lab (only two left been trying for months ) or do the research contract, with mining I can only get money. I'd take them both though.

Rank 395:
I would go with the gas, and plasma it. Dual uses (three, if more lab items come out), plenty of research to go. Won't be optimal for credits, but the higher size and production makes the two pretty even.

Rank 255 was going to say toxic simply looking to the future and needing extra credits but after reading other posts gas does seem more logical choice use in ct lab or credits, when I get that high

The gas. Why? I still have a lot of research to do, and when I will finally be done with it, I can still use rp for CT labs, and worst case, convert into dough.

The toxic.
As a fairly slow ranker, research doesn't matter much to me right now. Roughly half of my research production comes from scientists, anyway.
Also, EM is valuable
Edit: rank 234

research rank 670. toxic purifiers are much more common than the data optimizers helps with research and mining fills up much quicker than research for me

I'd take the gas planet and make it a plasma - I have everything researched for the most part so I'm use it for the credits. When can I have it?

I'd take neither and save the slot for a good AP planet, but under the assumption that it's a free planet and does not take up a planet slot ...
I'd take the VM 15x Gas, turn it into a Colossal 17x Plasma, use some of it for storage, the other space for research. It will produce roughly the same amount of credits (give or take, depending on what arts are on it) as the toxic, but has more space for storage arts as well. Also, if new research comes out, then I can use it. If not and I need the EM that the toxic will produce, then I will simply use the credits the Gas/Plasma gave and purchase the EM if I'm in desperate need of it.
Rank 1431, mining just isn't as useful. Research isn't really either, but of the two I feel that I can do more in the long run with the Gas.

Toxic, just because they're fairly easy to make, can get EM mineral from it and also easy to replace if taken away. I'm rank 447.

194 and the 15x gas as theres still lots of research to do and I think when research contact is unlocked the gas will produce more credits than the toxic.

judging from everybody elses answers, i'd take the toxic, no need to put defense on it, as they all want a maxed gas planet, so its gonna be safe from almost all the people above who posted then i can slowly build up creds and buy myself a maxed gas planet and put max defense on it to keep this lot away from stealing it wrong answer? or just being facetious? rank 788 or so
