Is there a way to increase my chance of fighting rare / uncommon mobs?

Im rank 91 now and everyone i inspect has a shadon transponder, or a stryll whatever, I only have 1 rare item from a boss that was shared to me, ive seen nothing else.

Am i doing something wrong? I farm NPC's when i can, have 60-70 kills now

Cheers

Well, that's not that many altogether, I have 827 NPC kills and haven't run into all of the different ships. Also, Stryll Transponders are from a mission, you can look at the wiki to see what sorts of things you can get from missions.

The best way to farm NPC's is to have a great hull, shield, and attack reading. If you have these you can take out more than if you just had one or two of them. I just passed 20K NPC kills. It took a while to get there but that is what I found works the best. Also be sure to be fully buffed when attacking. That means use all the artifacts that boost your stats. Cloak and scan don't have anything to do with attacking so don't use artifacts that increase them. Another thing that could help you get better NPC modules would be to join an alliance that has members your size so you can all share the ones you get with each other.

Another way of asking...

Does a higher scan number increase the chance of finding a Rare?

I have to disagree (partially) with the scan/cloak statement. Although I'm splitting the hair here scan does increase your chance to get critical hits and cloak does decrease the chance you are critically hit. Obviously attack/defense/shields give you a better trade off space/killing efficiency but I can imagine a point where you would have more decks than needed for those.

Yes this is true but I was going more off his rank and deck space. For him to add some of those things would take away to much deck space and not add the cloak and scan needed to do anything with.

With this on the only NPC boss I really know of that scan effects finding is the Dark ring. Even then I think 500 scan is what you need to see it.

Thanks Mojo, I kinda experimented with this theory over the weekend, and did find 1 Vortul (Extremely Rare).

But I still found an uncommonly common excess of common NPCs

The dark ring has 200 cloak, any scan of over 200 will see it. Don't worry about it till you start getting close to level 200.

I agree with you mojo on everything but the hull and defense. It's nice to be able to go through 10 and 15 mobs w/o having to repair but at low levels this just isn't feasable. Just pile on attack and energy and wait for your repair timer if you have to. As you level you'll find more room for hull and defense.

I never put defense in there for one. And I guess I said hull because its nice to not repair so much and when you do you get more out of it. True it may cost a bit more for the smaller ranks (tops out at 200M) but you get more and can go longer without another repair.

You forget defense.. High defense helps to mitigate the damage to prevent any hull repairs that cut down cost.. I am able to add 10% damage to the prison without losing whole shield thanks to high defense.. High energy regeneration is also good way to take down NPCs more often.

This is true and I do carry all the defense I can I just didn't put it here because for smaller players this takes up a lot of room that they could use for the other things mentioned here.

this is very true. it takes 4 decks to install an entire tier level up of a weapon, and it takes 6 for an entire tier of defence. my ship is grossly unbalanced with over 500 attack and only 200 defence, but the defence is just from a motion compensator and a ton of NPC mods. and besides, if you die while fighting an NPC then you can just repair your ship.

Exactly Veck.

Actually your ship isn't unbalanced at all. Because of the costly and sizeable nature of defense mods, most people run around with a lot less defense on their ships than they do attack and thats fine.

Yes Noc defense is very nice even when fighting mobs. But low level players just don't have the room for it on their ships. For npc farming, energy and attack reign supreame. When they're your size they'll be able to have all the defense they want.

Exactly right. In fact I was all ways way behind in defense. It wasn't till the last two weeks that I started to research hard in defense. Now I am working on the last tier. For the first time since starting the game my defense is now higher than my attack. lol I am noticing a deference in the fighting but it took a while to get there. For the smaller ranking players its like you said. Attack and energy are a must.
