I suggest a cultural knowledge thread be added in order to be able to abandon a planet through missions.
On edit : On second thought it would fit the mission tree easily. The research tree is already balanced, and mission trees are already incremental.
Level 1 Planet restoration
- Restoration projects - Radiation repairs - Minimal foot print legacy
reward : you can abandon one Tiny planet
(...)
Level x Alternate evolution pathways engineering
- Patron race - Space faring socio-engineering bootstrap - Legacy to mythology patronage retirement
reward : you can abandon one x planet
Etc.

You can make planets bigger with the right artifacts. The only other way I know of is to make it a soft target. Strip off everything that gives it a defensive boost and somebody will pick it up eventually.

You are correct, it is the only way for the moment.
This is why I am making this suggestion.

I could see I high AP artifact that could so it. Some place in the 30k range.
This anti colonizer need to be rare (though in the game). Since you made the desion to pick that planet.

Like many new to this game, I realized I had played my hand badly concerning colonization during the starting phase. I agree that any artifact capable of relieving one from a planet should be rare and that game balance has to be maintained.

Well you can easily fill out a survey in the [Redeem Points] menu for just 5 points. I was able to buy two F.A.T.H.E.R. relays just filling out the surveys - which was a total of 80 points.

Thanks for the info. Profiling or non-profiling surveys? I'm a bit touchy about this issue Plamok
