How are you "States"? I would assume you mean this is the "a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one", or "the civil government of a country", but seeing as you are not either a country, nation, nor a territory I bleive this is incorrect terminology.

I think planets count as territories.

Territories="an area of land under the jurisdiction of a state"
If your not a state, you cant own a territory, so its still incorrect.

I have seen you talk about your ship Coth. Do you really have a "ship" like in the game? No it's just an idea or abstract. Is that the best you got  ? I am sure you can get more creative then that to bust our balls  ....

hmm... :?

If planets are individual nations ruled by 1 person (the player),
that the player acts like a commanding force,
and legion leaders are overseers of members,

Wouldn't that make a player "shogun" and a legion leader "emperor"?

Again, no counter argument so this doesnt mean anything, so i dont need to get more creative :D. Infact, this is easy!

Last time I checked Japan had nothing to do with this, so that wouldnt make a player a "shogun". Shogun="a hereditary commander-in-chief in feudal Japan"

Where are you getting your definitions from? (I seriously want to know) :)

I read that a shogun is "a commander of a force" as it was used in Japan, "...the original meaning of "shogun" is simply "a general"" Taken by context and not just by definition however, I was just using comparison instead of strait use of the word. I was using by comparison for my earlier post as well. :)

It is clearly several trite names amalgamated into a heaping mess of nonsense. I don't see what needs understanding... I think it needs X's or something though.

Macs have a built in dictionary, I use that.
As for comparing, if your talking terminology, you cant use words other then the ones your focusing on. To do otherwise denies the point of arguing terminology. Think of it like algebra, if you change one side you have to make the same change to another.

I thought that a state means a self-governing political entity that can be interchangeably with a sovereignty such as country, nation, empire, etc? I would assume that a planet is a self-governing political entity that can be used interchangeably with its galactic empire. I could see the pattern but only bigger..

Remember.. There is no such thing as known civilization beyond Earth so the terms we know are restricted to Earth with lands.. We don't own any oceanic lands yet (civilizations in the ocean) so no terms for that yet as well. I could see that State term could be expanded once we are advanced enough to live in the ocean and Space using same concept of self-governing political entity as entire planet (instead of cute little piece of land) would do under an empire of many planets. One planet could send out a set of representatives and senates and whatever something new comes up to galactic council to vote for their own planets' benefit just like old and new Republic of the Star Wars does..

Heck, I'm certain that we would just invent new terms when we are advanced enough to live in Space to prevent any confusion of the State definition.. OR we actually invent new kind of political system would require entire new terms to define it to support Space Political System that existing politics wouldn't work well.

Well then why dont you do that instead of beating a dead horse?

There are legal precedents for sovereignty without Territory, the Order of Malta is one i can think of. Full legal name is: The Sovereign Order of The Knights of Malta. Although no longer a fighting organization, they still exist as a charitable one.

Coth what are you like some kind of grammar or English teacher? First its Chris Markey and his....now it's the definition of "state"? It's very clear you understand the idea, so your just going to argue about things such as what "state" means with Mr Wood? It makes no sense at all, to be honest. If you really need a real world example, consider the EU. All separate countries but they also have the Euro as a common currency an they are almost all part of NATO. Or consider the Greatest country in the world, The USA USA USA(Sorry non Americans its just how I feel) states rights are a real thing, and then theres the federal government. We have States, We have Senators , we have votes and we have a federal government. WE ARE THE UNITED STATES OF THE NOVA REPUBLIC!!!!!!! Why you would worry about how we label our group is a little out there, even for you

Just to continue the thread jacking:
Do you consider each of the Nova Legions a state or is each player a state? Personally I would have chosen to use the word alliance or federation, but I do not know the internal political workings of the Nova Legions.

Should I retaliate against all Nova legions when a member of one of the legions attacks me?

Author:  jcwiggens [ Thu Oct 14, 2010 8:29 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: United States of the NOVA Republic

each legion is its own state(City State). Federation is to much like star trek. Who you Retaliate against is a matter for you to decide

Post subject:  Re: United States of the NOVA Republic

How the separate legions of Nova ally themselves is what matters. The game rules changed because having one huge oppressive legion was bad for the game overall. If you declare that all of the Nova legions are as one then you are circumventing those game rules. Furthermore if members of my legion are being attacked weekly by members of the Nova legions then is that not a declaration of war against my legion?
