This has been very successful in a non-facebook MMO I play, so I just thought is GL could try it. A timed event gives 2 missions, but only 1 can be done by the player. Then when the event is over, the number of completions is added up for each mission. The one with the higher count determines the fate of events to come. (an example is a war event where each mission represents fighting for one side or the other, the mission that is completed more determines who wins the war)

i like the war event idea..everyone pic a side, then have the sides "fight" at the end of the timed event, winning side gets a prize or a lil medal on thier ship view

i like it
edit: but it should be in the special mission stuff. completing one cancels the other out. it will alter the storyline of the mission such as the battle with the zolazin. instead of just fighting zolazin, the other side fights the glaviz. the story of the next mission will reflect the win or loss from the previous battle.

another idea is to have a similar mission just for PvP. you fight in the mission and come across enemies fighting in the other mission tree (higher chance if they do more of the mission). defeating one of them give a ship parts or something similar (should be a indicator on battle tab or a direct link though the mission). this way the mission chain can cross over into the real game.

so like one mission is working/fighting for the zolazin, the other the glaviz....that could work to
