Why does it take energy to shoot my guns at someone but not for them to shoot back? If you are going to have an energy system that nickels and dimes you for every little thing, shouldn't everyone be charged equally?

Besides how awefully pear shaped this could go and be abused, you are spending the energy to FLY to your target's location and back after you attack. Spending time away from your planet to either do missions, or attack takes alot of energy.
This is what is costing you, not firing your cannons.
just my guess

If that were true then why does it charge you for your 2nd/3rd/4th/5th attack? You have already flown to their location so there would be no energy cost for that.
As far as abuse, it could actually cut down on that. Currently you can use all your energy attacking and not have to worry about reprisals because it is free to defend. If we are charged to defend one would have to attack less to make sure he had enough energy leftover to defend himself.

it's just a game process ... doesn't have to be 100% real logic and you spend energy / gain XP ... Defender doesn't loose energy / doesn't gain xp.

The alternatives would be: A) Attacking cost no energy. This would be disastrous, there NEEDS to be a limit to how often you can attack or it would be horribly abused. B) Attacking drained your victims energy. This would be more disastrous. One alert from the right legion would ensure you NEVER had any energy to spend.
It's a game and not a simulation, some of the rules might not completely make sense but they're required for balance.
(but I wouldn't mind seeing more ways to gain minor amounts of energy, like most browser games offer!)

this is a terrible idea. the defender should NOT be charged for being attacked. what if the defender has no energy to spend? you going to let them sit there and not fire back?
