There are also lots of websites out there, swagbucks, gifthulk and other simple survey websites wherein by spending 20 mins a day doing some stuff here and there(or by multi-tasking and using such sites whilst playing the game) can earn you a fair bit of free facebook gift cards or paypal payments.
I myself have earned around 3/4 of the money i've invested into this game by simply joining those sort of websites and using that cash i earn(whilst i'm playing the game/have the game open).
Depending on where you live, UK, US OR Canadian, you can join a site like swagbucks and signup for some gambling websites and net a return on the deposit, i.e. Deposit $5-15 and they'll give you a reward usually equal to a payout amount of the same. So $5 fb gift card costs 500 SB's, they might pay you as much as 2k SB's to signup, plus you might get even more money with whatever bets you place on those gambling websites.
Since late September i've earned over 2000 GP(from various methods listed above) and i got that by doing everyday things listed above whilst playing this game at the same time. I'll be doing the same during Harvest event too, whilst i play the game i'll have a few other tabs open playing videos, doing a survey and other such things and i'll earn around $60 this month doing just that($50 or so a month is average earning tbh, which is still great for the minimal effort it takes). You need a robust laptop/desktop with a good amount of RAM to be running all those processes at the same time, but it pays off if you want to play for free whilst also paying to play at the same time.
As pokerman says, there are actually very very few players who are CC Warriors in this game anymore.... and those that are actually aren't all that strong let alone as far ahead of the curve as much as people accuse them of being.
Most CC warriors these days will spend that money buying GP items to sell like QSE/RT sets to everyday players like yourself whom can't/won't buy their own GP in any substantial amount, because the $50 they spend to make those sets, they can turn around and use the CTP to buy better planets than they could make with that GP using just the market itself.

All the CC warriors can still be the first to reap the GP rewards, but they shouldn't be the ONLY ones entitled to them. Just my opinion.
They're not entitled to them, and far from being the only ones either. They're spending their real money that they hopefully worked hard to earn irl on a game they love. It's how games these days work.
They get a slight advantage over the non-paying crowd & believe me when i tell you, it really is a slight advantage. Even if a person drop 550 GP($50) a week on this game, that's still only enough to make 3 VM(or Col if you have upgrades) 15x-20x planets w/RT a month(assuming a RT, 2 QSE's & 12 tf's(assumes a vl 3x terra to start) = 596 GP).
However that planet will suck ass if they don't have the necessary structures to build it properly, which after 30-40 planets becomes insanely hard to do repeatedly.
In terms of the modules that cost GP, aside from the ones that provide minor amounts of scan, most are unnecessary $$$ sucking modules meant to rely on some players naivety on what is and isn't a good investment long term.
Sure you might need those +8% defense whilst under attack at rank 300, at rank 1k not so much so long as you ain't a tin can. The mod that lets you invade that planet 4 hours earlier each day, trust me if you're invading planets every day, you're invading 50% trash that you're gonna be stuck with for years unless you abandon it.
So as i said, there's a slight advantage but this game can be really easily played and played well by someone that doesn't spend money at all, free or earned.
EDIT:
Just from looking right now at the earn GP section, there's 6 GP for joining Twitter. That's some sweet GP for joining something that id say around half a billion people use. Get yoself an account and some free duckies.
