It would be cool to see how a planet has changed hands over the time it has been colonized. You can tell if it is a old planet or if it is a war zone. As an added feature, a player could add a in-character history log describing what happened during their rule over the planet. The things people would think up would add more background to the galaxy the pilots live in.
