 When attacking a player you get exp.

did you leave the legion to lock on an npc? or were you locked on an npc that wasnt disabled? as far as i know you dont get xp from passivly fighting battles, but im not sure...

You do not. The only time you get XP overnight is when you are fighting an elite/boss and receive the reward while offline.
