I honestly have no idea what to research next, I'm a slow ranking PVPer.

as a pvp you really cant afford to rank too slow as eventually the size of the newer more powerful weapons shields and defenses will outpace the size of your ship

also the cost of the new tech is goin to require higher level of planet tech just for the upkeep

yer energy tech looks low get that up a few more levels for a good start

I'd put some research to energy and shields, don't neglect any tier of research, yeah shields aren't as space efficient as hull, but you'll make people cry when they don't even get past your shields when trying to disable you and they've run out of both hull and shields. and you're going to need more energy to do pretty much everything in the game.

Again with the energy. Eventually I want to only have to run 2 hulls, 1 cannon, 1 defense and have high stats.
As for shields? Urgh, why... I just don't have the decks.

This makes sence - except I don't intend to protect my planets until I get sing mines and mass shields (going to research when I can get singularity cannons)

then, quite simply, you are over-gunned...what is the point of lots of attack if you dont have bullets?
think of energy as those bullets...5 energy per shot adds up.
the more shots you can fire, the more xp you receive ergo the faster you will rank...simples

great attack for your level, but you'll be at that level a long time...those you kill now will be able to come back in a few weeks and blow you away through sheer stamina.
