 Slow-ranking vs. Fast-Ranking pros and cons?

Hello :)

I am still somewhat new to this game (about 3 weeks of playing), and I had a question. I think I have been ranking at a "relatively average" pace, I am at rank 33, and I feel like its about 1-2 days between when I rank and not rank. I mostly concentrated on missions at the beginning though I've been concentrating on NPCs in hopes of getting Terraforming Devices (got 2 so far) and Toxic Purifiers (got 1 so far), but I was curious, what are the pros/cons of slow-ranking versus fast-ranking?

At your rank, neither
Slow ranking's main point is be strong for your rank from all the AP pull you get from planet(and maybe base). For players your rank, that will also include a research tree boost as you will also gain RP over time(maybe some base shipment there too)
Problem with that is, unless you bought the mission planets, given your level your production probably is pretty low. Frankly, it would take insane amount of time for you to get anything significant due to likely low production. Frankly, I would not consider slow ranking until at least rank 100.
As for fast ship, as you certainly can't NPC auto rank yet(thou if you can, it'd be awesome), any kind of auto/fast ranking will likely result in a tin can ship. This is the main con of fast ranking, if your are not doing it in some very productive way, it's going to lead to a weak ship for your rank. Ofc, the pro would be quite a bit of shiny new toys but it won't really help too much as ship stuff takes deck(which you can't afford much of) and planet stuff takes at least decent planet to be significant.

What I would do at your rank is find a RP legion, research into weapon, energy, scan and hull only. If your techs get to the point where you can barely afford the upkeep(I'd say upkeep being 50+% daily income), you can switch to planetary structures for higher income. Rank off of mostly PvP if not PvP alone. At your rank, there will be very little traps flowing around, making badging pretty easy, as compared to higher ranks. Getting a set of Dom I and saving enough for Dom III is a good idea. The blasters thou... probably won't happen anytime soon.

Okay thank you! My arti production is only ~300/hr (297 to be exact), so I know I have a lot to go, and a mining production of 286/hr, however; I know their is a lot of growing up to do. I have been doing a lot of NPCs lately (I got an Extremely Rare NPCs and quite a few uncommon, so its been luring me in, but I can only do maybe 2-3 NPCs on current energy level. (148, 21/hr).

Thanks again! I will definitely concentrate on PvP and the areas you mentioned as well. I have been going pretty equally on my research tree, however my concentration lately has been in attack, hull, and planetary buildings (defense as well, but mostly those 3).

Yep, I'd go full out Red, Yellow and Blue hunting, in an arti legion, keeping your deck count low and adding only Tactical Officers and Engineers.

Research is easy to get going, arti is not.

Definitely do not slow rank at low productions, you're only falling further behind that way.

shields is also a good 1 you will need for planet defence if you do not research shields you will not be able to put defence onto your planets to be able to defend them against us higher ranks i say at your rank do nothing but player vs player gather up your badges it is the best time as a rank 1400 attacking a player can range from 100 to 5k energy to drop the ship 100 is getting lucky that they are attacking something and i snuck in a quick easy kill speed ranking is good once you get all of your stuff in gear can always slow down here and there but stick with player vs player for now

if you want to see how you compare against 10 pilots: ship log showdown.

the relevant chart for ranking is days / rank (3rd down the left). anything over 1.5 days per rank would generally be considered slow.ranking.

folks who specialize in pvp are generally below the trend line on the npc/pvp kills chart, so you can see how they have built their tactical officer ratios.

I used to engage in this debate with my cousin all the time. It is still a fun one to argue. I prefer the fast route, but I would also suggest these links.

The main question though isn't really one of rank as much as it is production. You are a long long long way away, but after a certain point (as the game content lessens), there is little need to go blasting through the roof on your rank. In fact, up until Dan promised some recent changes, it was actually counter productive to go too high in rank. Remember, the key is planet production. If your APR can match or even excel another ship, it doesn't matter if they are 400 ranks higher.

I found ranking about once a day to be a good pace. Twice if a Tri/Cube dropped.

slow ranking... but im biased ;)

at low ranks you can more or less get by with just RP planets in an artifact legion base, granted you wont have the constant income, but it will allow you to more ore less keep up tech wise with those around you, while still having artifacts.

granted ranking up faster = more planets faster, but you still need to have the research to back everything up. planets are the most important thing of all, an early start on planets pays off WAY in advance. I typically state that a good goal is to have +10 structures researched and in use by rank 100, the earlier the better. after that everything tends to fall into place.

I know taking it slow can seem excrutiating, but with good planets it does pay off.
