High scan will increase your chances of critical hits against players and NPCs, make it harder to hack you, and will allow you to see past enemy cloak revealing their modules.
There are other uses for it, but those are probably the most pertinent to PvP.

Well, there's the somewhat mythical "crit-hit" on enemy ships, but the biggest factor scan plays in PvP is who you see on your BT. Varying amounts of scan will change who shows up on your BT (Buffet Table) because of Scan vs. Cloak.

Do you think it is worth the space at my lv though? Do you think I should install them mods?

If you don't have 5 hulls installed yet, I would work on that rather then installing so-so scan mods that will get uninstalled over and over.

As a PvPer, I don't use them. I'm more inclined to use cloak than scan. I'm already maxed on weapons and hull, just working on defence now (which I need badly...), then I'll go cloak and THEN scan.

It depends what you want to achieve in PvP.
1. If you want to have a strong ship, tough to disable at all times, but you dont aim for the leader boards, dont use scan modules.
2. If you enjoy killing higher rankers or strong ships.. again dont use them.
3. If you want to have easy badges, kill people for 40-50 energy, then scan is a lot more important than hull(for example). Thats what i do when i do PvP. I can switch from 6 to 400 scan with different modules and I can choose my targets wisely, kill them easily, with a good kill/energy ratio. Thats how I dont nerf my other activities just because I do pvp a lot.

I won't install them(before all def/hull/atk can be put in) but I would research the tree to some extend as well as "build" the specials eventually.... gonna waste some extra cargo(and upkeep/repair) after build-uninstall but.... if it help u land one extra good planet on ur next spree, u might end up gaining something out of it, especially artis

again i seem to be the oddball here, but i think scan is important, but then again i also throw out spy probes like they're bills to be paid so....
any rate i'd use them, but thats me.

To expand on my previous post: I don't use scan because I PvP for fun. I pick out players around my rank with Savage/Insane reps and blast away. I don't want to pick on some noob...
I used to, and that is why I am on the killsboard, but really, you should be able to kill the savage/insane ships in your own rank range. That's what PvP is fun for to me, having a fight with someone who you know is gunna hit back.
That's kinda why my deathstat is pretty high. Not to mention I'm currently one hell of a glass cannon (Thanks Darth Flagitious!), with 0 researched defence modules but maxed attack and hull.
So use scan if your aim is to stat pad or badge. If your in it for fun, just pick someone based on rep. It won't matter too much.
I particuarly like badging Taltos, as he is one place higher than me on the killsboard, but has a vastly inferior ship. I like to make the point. Daily, if possible.

Look at it this way, you can pretty much kill whoever you want whenever you want. Kill 15 people, die once. Nice ratio in my book.

When i bt hunt it is to "pad my stats" so to speak
the curse of leaderboard climbing when you hunt as a 400 is that everyone is trapped- and if your morals prevent you using nulls on unmanned ships- then you hit the weakest ship you can find- and the more scan you have the weaker the ships that will show up
I don't think hitting on bt is fighting- as most ships not manned- just another form of npc hunting really
I go for efficiency- and the weaker the ship the more efficiently you can get the stats
So- yes i think scan is important
