What must I do to improve my crew's ability to raid, other than buying the armories?

Attack points and Tactical Officers.

having a large crew helps alot, such as alot of Engineers, Tactical Officers Helmsmen and Scientists. And the best way to get a larger crew is to increase your Artifact points per hour, either by scanning planets, invading and or colonizing planets, asking for a unwanted but still good artifact planet from fellow legion mates and then eventually down the road you can have the option to change your player Race to Taltherian and every 40hrs you can increase the Richness of the artifact on planets up to 15x mega rich. So hold onto those Glaviz devices, oh also hold onto your Gaia seeds and Mass surface Melters you can make some AMAZING planets if you wait till you get to Taltherian comboing those artifacts and that ability can boost your artifacts tremendisly. And if you want to protect your planets that are generating your artifact points improve your cloaking research and hunt for dark badges to increase the amount of cloak you can have on that planet because if its not cloaked then it has a high chance to be scanned and taken away, oh lets not forget that in your improve your planetary structures you can get even more Artifact points from the planet per hour. last peice of advice DO NOT colonize anything below Very Large size and Rich in and resources.


All that together will over all improve your raiding abilities!

the only thing that matters is what place you ended up on in the ranking list (= how mutch dammage you did compaired to the other players hitting the base)
and your bonuses to raid from armories/arsenals, the raider Profession and the special Christmas Systematic Avarice boost you can get in the Universal Service Terminal in december
