Generally speaking, NPC's in a mmo is a NON-player-Character. That may denote a myriad of characters that may not be killable. Mobs are the common term for Monsters, because the fastest way to Level or farm something is to group them together and use an area of effect attack =..=. If you guys played anything else besides GL that's where the term comes from.
Obviously these two terms doesn't really make sense in GL since there are no, "merchant" or "quest" giver Npcs only killable ones, nor can you "mob" something in the true sense of the word. But yeah =). Cleared.
Actually...not true.
"Mob(/s)" is a very old term (well, very old as far as computer terminology goes) that predates the current graphical MMOs, and even the web itself. It's a term from back in the days of text based MUDS, and is short for Mobile (or Mobile program.) Back in the day, every "monster" was a seperate program, and some were able to move from "room" to "room" thus, they were mobile (programs).
Bored yet?

/sigh I miss Midian, and the old ZombieMud.
