can anyone tell me, what is the effect of population? ie what is the benefit of having a larger population?

just found the answer, it`s the equivelent to hull of a ship, ie the higher population, the longer it will survive when attacked

precisely- higher population means that it can hold out for longer, so you have the potential to get back online and defend your planet
