enemy att/def during battle

 OK so I've been alerted to this guys ship(shall remain nameless) I see I'm 11 ranks above him so I go ahead and attack.. this is what I see
him: atack:20+ def:34+ me attack 108 def:75 yet he STILL WINS what....the...HECK!? |

The attack/defense displayed for an enemy only represents the modules they install on their ship. Crew (which is not seen) also contributes to their stats.
You can find out the actual total attack or defense of an enemy ship by using Spy Probes. |

could also be he had a lot more hull moduals than you did.

Another factor is your ship size if your ship is larger than his he will do more damage while you will do less to him.
