When researching and building new tec, should I keep the old stuff and build on top of it? or sell of the old to make room for the new?

In other words, does stacking the new tec on top of existing tec make it more effective?

Honestly, you will have to do the math. Sometimes it makes sense to destroy your old buildings and make new ones. Other times it makes not noticeable difference. Sometimes you gain a space or two by upgrading but the only things you can fit in the space aren't worth the cost of making the space.

You will be limited by the space you have on your ship and planets. Ships also have a limit on the number of modules you can have installed of a specific type. The newer tech is more space efficient but can be expensive to try to upgrade everything as soon as you reach the next level of tech. I usually upgrade my tech when I have a need for the new tech, or every couple of levels on the research tree.

Upgrading can make your planets better in other ways though. You might only save one or two space by upgrading your buildings, but this extra space can be put to use with population structures or cloaking (Or you could upgrade the existing population structures and cloaking). More population means it takes longer for enemies to attack and invade your planet, whilst cloaking means it is less likely that an enemy will find your planet in the first place. :)

By far the biggest space-hogs on your planet are your production buildings. For the first three levels of production you really want to keep them up to date. After you get into +4 or better though, you may want to skip levels if it costs too much for ya.

Something else to keep in mind is "is somebody actually going to want this rock?". Personally, unless you're talking the MegaRich w/multipliers planets, I'd never invade a world that was smaller than Average size. So you probably don't need to worry about defending it as much.

Actually, I was primarily interested in how this affected the development of my SHIP, but I suppose it could apply to planets as well.

When you develop the tec for a big gun, do you get rid of the smaller guns?
When you develop the tec for a new power source, do you get rid of the old generator and all of its capacitors, relays, and conduits?

Typically players will wait to upgrade until they finish an entire Tier of research, so in reality you should usually wait until you make a jump of 4 tech levels before you scrap everything and upgrade. It can get pricy, and it can take up room. Figure for a MkIII of one weapon vs the MkIII of the next higher level weapon, you are talking about 4 additional space for each weapon of that new tech. For a maximum of 8 weapons, every tier jump you make requires 32 more space maximum. However, the attack/space ratio you are going to get out of higher level tech is almost always worth it. If you've got the money, it is almost always worth it to upgrade as much as you can to the most recent technology, then fill extra space will smaller, lower level stuff.

Yes, always. But I do the maths first, just to be sure. I've got 8 standard weapons equipped, so I always buy 7 of any new guns. But then I probably don't have enough decks to equip an eighth one, so I just level up until I have enough decks then equip the eighth one later. If a decent NPC shows up though I always equip even a crappy weapon in the final slot, because every point of attack can be a help.

I sell them lol. But I always do the maths to make sure it is worth it based on my currently available deckspace. With capacitors/relays/conduits, you also have to factor in the increased drain on your max power level. If your max energy is less than 100, then the game starts complaining about your setup. Drannik Power Cores and Genetarr Transmitters can help relieve this problem, but obviously they take up even more of your precious deckspace. Eventually, you'll just have to start spending some rank points on Engineers.

What I don't get is (when they have 6 guns) why people equip 6 different tiers of cannons. It makes no sense. I saw another player with 1 heavy disruptor, 2 ion cannons, a light laser cannon and a mass driver. what kind of a person equips a mass driver when they have access to heavy disruptors!?

Once you get up to the higher ranks you start to put on each item per tier just because it takes so long to get the next one. My next hull and energy are both up to 800K RP for one level in the tier. So as I get one of them unlocked I will build what I can of them. Also you have to remember that they cost more to build as well and they will up your daily in come. As of now mine is at 6.6 B I will change my class to builder soon but for now I can pay for that. Models start cost well over 1B to build and you do what ever you can to get the most out of your research.

As for now thou for you I would, if you have room, build new after you do a tier and destroy the old. Be sure to keep your planetary research up some too so you can pay for your new things. As you go on you will start to see more and more where you want to go with your ship and what strategy you want to go with.
