NEW PLANETARY EVENTS:
(Some better than others)

1. Supernova at system sun: (EX. Rare)
-Type 1. Planet too close to sun:
Frys the planet into a "Carbonized" Type (+4 research availability IE from Abundant to Very rich), but destroys all planetary structures. CARBONIZED type planet is essentially a ball of charcoal, and the image will reflect that.

-Type 2. Planet far enough from sun to survive.

The sun having been destroyed, the planet drifts around the galaxy with no sun to orbit. Turns the planet into a "Wander" type planet (Images dark [no sun], but not pitch black [stars]), giving +4 to research availability, but +100% build costs, due to logistics concerns over the planet never being in the same place.

2. Partical Collier disaster. (Can only happen at planets that have research is the most available resource.

A disaster at the local particle collier turns the planet into a black hole, giving +15 to resource availability to research, and immunity to invasion, but destroys all structures, and has a build cost of +1000%

Ok - maybe it stretches the imagination a little - but it's possible :)

3. Outstanding Scientist/Industrialist/Miner born.

Give a +20% boost to production in the respective field for ALL planets

Are you having problems with research? =P

That part seems kind of obvious :P

All in all though, good ideas, we need new stuff for planets.
+1

the outstanding one is a temp one, right? cause +20% to all planet is pretty huge...

the rest can be perma and very nice

Meh, I'd rather:

Spacial Rift: Extremly rare
Planet has come into contact with a spacial rift! It has been fluxes from enemy scans, but buildcosts have doubled for 3 days until trade routes are re-established with the colony.

Major tectonic action on (terra, gaia, or barren planet) has increased heat signatures significantly, changing the planet to volcanic and increasing mining by +2

Recent reports shown that the crust on (volcanic planet) has cooled, turning the planet into a barren planet and increasing all resource richness by +1

A shift in climate has changed (any terrestrial planet), the planet has undergone an extreme cooling process, turning the planet into an icy planet and increasing research richness by +1

A shift in climate has changed (icy planet), the planet has generated a thermal energy source, melting the ice, turning the planet into an oceanic planet, increasing planet size by +1 and artifact by +2

A new star has erupted! allowing for the discovery of more planets! (Increased % of finding more planets)

A new sun has been found near (planet) increasing production by 5%

And let's not forget about negative planetary events

A sun has died out near (planet) decreasing production by 5%

A gang of space bandits have attacked (planet) (damages planet by eliminating 5 - 30% of population, and has a chance to destroy a module purchased by credits)

Massive natural disasters have devastated (planet) ruining the landscape (damages planet by eliminating 20 - 90% of the population and destroys a few modules purchased by credits, also triggers the random event devastated landscape)

recent studies suggest that molecular levels around (planet) have compressed the mass of the planet, reducing it's size by 1 level

Icy: Planet invaded by Space Penguins, population doubled, research halved for 1 week.

I could see this angering people who colonized an icy to bring it up to a point to be turned into an Oceanic, but aren't quite at the point where they want to use the melter yet (or worse, they are at that point, but before they can use the melter the planet naturally melts and becomes only Colossal instead of Mega Colossal).
